splitting the rent

Splitting the rent can be a pain in the ass, and sometimes it can put a heavy load on a friendship. If you are sharing and apartment with a friend and one of the rooms is bigger,  does that person pay more? What if the other one has more windows? Here is how i believe these attributes should be compensated for, each is assigned a numeric value and they should be added up. The difference should be percent difference in rent.
Bedroom Size- 2 per square foot
Closet size- 1 per square foot
Bathroom size- 1 per square foot
Own bathroom- 4
each window-1
cable- 2
away from common area-1

  1. I like that system a lot. I wish my ex-roommate and I had come up with something like that when we were together. The stresses with rent really put a strain on our friendship. We had been close friends since middle school, now we hardly speak.

  2. I agree with your statement; however, I think it also depends on how much your roommates wants or need the space. For example, where I am currently living I have the slightly bigger room, closet, and bathroom (shared with my sister). My other roommates (two guys) actually insisted that we got for the same rent because they felt that they didn't need the extra space because they didn't have as many things as my sister and I do. I guess it's all a matter of perspective.
